I recently recoverd by original IBM PC/IX 360K 5.25 inch diskettes.

You'll probably remember that PC/IX was one of IBM's first UNIX releases, the work actually being done by INTERACTIVE Systems Corporation.

PC/IX was the PC version and VM/IX was the mainframe 370 version.

Well for posterity I'd like to get PC/IX up and running and it ran originally on a real PC/XT with an 8088 processor and monochrome screen. It did not run on a PC/AT with 286 processor, it did not run on a machine with VGA graphics.

So here is the problem ... Using Microsoft VPC or VMware 5 or 6 I can create an old style DOS based real-mode PC. However when the first PC/IX diskette is allocated and booted from , after a healthy chugging reading the disk sound I get nothing ... Only an underline .

My real PC/XT 286 with VGA dispaly ... same result: read disk, then flashing underline displayed, then nothing.

I am pretty sure that the VGA emulation of VMWARE / VPC is incompatible with PC/IX

So that is the history.... Back to the original question then... Is there an accurate PC/XT software emulator out there. I have seen a few that dont work, some with no documentation or instructions.

Can anybody help please!

Regards marcus.

Well, back to the original reply then: why not put up the disk images and let some folks with the real hardware have a try?

Kinda sounds like a display problem; that flashing underline sounds familiar...

DOSBOX can boot diskette images now (need 0.72 or later, I think). In fact, most of them can. MESS is another one.

But it sounds like maybe the disks are bad? Put diskette images online; I'd be happy to test them for you (I have a 5160 I'd like to try PC/IX on).

Unfortunately, no emulator is accurate enough to emulate an IBM PC 5150 in an outstanding way..
