I've been trying to get this thing to work in my XT. The card seems to be fine, and the CD-ROM drive is a 1x which takes the caddies. The driver loads fine. The roadblock I've hit is getting MSCDEX to load - it freezes up the computer whenever I try to load it. The PC has MS-DOS 3.2 installed, but I tried booting off a 3.3 floppy with the same problem. I even tried SHSUCDX which is an MSCDEX alternative, but that also froze up the computer.

Is pursuing this pointless, or is there something I need to do to get MSCDEX to work?

As I recall MSCDEX was first introduced in DOS 5.0. Maybe you should try using that OS instead? Also, it is possible that MSCDEX may be using 286 instructions?

I think I may have found my problem. For this version of MSCDEX, I need more RAM! Unfortunately, my XT only has 640K to work with :)

I believe I need an old version of MSCDEX (version 2.1) in order to use this CD-ROM drive on my XT, but I can't find it anywhere on the net.

I'll try installing MS-DOS 5.0 and see if that helps anything. Well, I have to find a copy first :)

Try a search using "mscdex21.zip"

I tried doing this for myself.

All I get are .doc files from these zips. And the Simtel downloads give me EXEs, which don't work for me as I use a Mac and SPARC workstation. No Windows running machines for me.

The MSCDEX21.DOC file is dated MAY92.
The earliest MSCDEX.EXE that I can find is dated MAR92.
Here it is.

Wow, thanks Modem7!

I'll give it a shot when I get home.

Thanks! I won't be able to try it till I get my new desk put in (my IBM PS/2 Model 25 XT is sitting on the floor at the moment)
