Gang,
I just unearthed Robert C. Brenner's "IBM Personal Computer Troubleshooting & Repair" from one of my stacks. It's a book that tells you how to isolate problems to individual components in the IBM PC/XT/AT. No more throwing a whole board away because one component failed.
I wouldn't recommend that the typical graduate of high school electronics attempt soldering ICs, but the book can be lent to maintenance personel who know how to do it right but who aren't familiar with vintage computers.
Many used copies of this book are available on Amazon.com. I use them as bookseller of last resort because they insist on selling animal fighting magazines, but with used books their profit is minimal - most of it goes to the individual seller of the book. Here is the website:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.html/002-2329907-2296854?ie=UTF8&op=1&o=Used&a=0672226626
Let's keep that venerable IBM iron going!
