I'm not sure you can compare the esthetic Jobs with the old man Tramiel. Jack admired the Japanese, knew how to cut costs by making parts internally instead of relying on manufacturers but maybe was no technical dominant. Steve seems more to have surveiled the development like an hawk or owl.

For us Europeans, names like Clive Sinclair and later, to less extent, Alan Sugar (Amstrad) take part in namedropping too. I think Tramiel and Sinclair make a better rant comparison. I think the comparison between Jobs and Gates is interesting too, or as Andy Hertzfeld writes:

Each one thought he was smarter than the other one, but Steve generally treated Bill as someone who was slightly inferior, especially in matters of taste and style. Bill looked down on Steve because he couldn't actually program.

Yeah! Sir Clive gets my vote. (And I'm an American...go figger).

I admire Steve Wozniak for his technical insight and his engineering skill. While Steve Jobs was not that significant in technical development, he was keen in marketing and getting Apple off the ground although it does seem he needed to be replaced later.

Since aquiring an Amstrad NC100 my esteem for Alan Sugar has risen significantly, but Sir Clive's contribution to the history of the laptop (Cambridge Z88) is still my favorite (better documentation).
