New work laptop

I've had the same Dell Latitude D600 for years:
D600
14.1" Screen
1.6gHz Pentium M (PIII Core, believe it or not!)
60GB Drive
DVD+-RW CD-RW

Got my new lappie today:

Dell Latitude D630
4GB RAM
15.4" 1440x900 WXGA+ Display
2.5gHz Core 2 Duo with 6MB Cache (T9300)
160GB 7200rpm drive
802.11a/b/g + BlueTooth
DVD+-RW / CD-RW
256MB Nvidia Quadro NVS 135M


And, it's like night and day - this new one is absolutely awesome!

Came out to like $1723 or so, I think, but what I have realized, is how durable and reliable the 'tudes are. Mine was about 4 years old, and had been on countless trips with me, working in airports, ship conference rooms, hotels, pulled out in cabs to get addresses, etc...

I liked the smallness of the D600, but I REALLY LOVE this thing!

The video card alone, I think, is worth the price of admission!

The D620 / D630 are my favourite Dell laptops. I buy them in all the time in my work! Very robust and decent quality :)

At work, my laptop is a D820. But we also have D620 and D630s. Cant fault them.

PowerEdge servers, now thats a different story.....

Give me a HP any day...

PowerEdge's are OK until they break, or you need to upgrade them. For example, we have 2 2950s here that are identical. But one will support PCI Express, the other wont. There is no way of telling, unless you call Dell or you are lucky enough to have a sticker on the system board telling you its PCI Express compatible.

Dells telephone support arnt great too, especially on the laptop side. If you know what you are talking about, and you have told then what troubleshooting you've done, they want you to do it all again!

Anyway we looked at Hewlett Packard, IBM, Fujitsu-Siemens and so on too but in this case we got from Dell, not one but two (Quad-Core) CPUs and twice as much memory for the same price as any other supplier could offer. On the other hand the previous server we bought 1.5 years ago the opposite was true: we got more memory and hard disk from IBM than Dell.

It would be Los Angelas or Detroit where you would need a bullet proof laptop (panisonic toughbook)
