MAJOR EDIT: Check out the new DL!

Alright, this prog is TOTALLY revamped. full POP3/SMTP support, send/receive, decoding of "quoted-printable" encoded mails, supports SMTP AUTH PLAIN and authorizes via MIME base64 key if your server needs it.

check it out, tons and tons of improvements and fixes. it's completely usable.

If you add IMAP support, I can test it... I haven't had a POP mailbox for at least a decade (POP sucks).

Wow, another nice one, Mike! Soon you'll be able to combine these apps all together to make your own OS :D

Can it handle attachments? Seems like it could be a pretty good way to transfer files to and from the machine.

TTT for total revamp :)

and yes, it will SOON support attachments. that's about the last major feature it's missing as far as a DOS client would go, apart from base64 message decoding.

and trixter: if you're bored enough to try it as well, quick free and easy POP3/SMTP account w/ 5 GB at www.inbox.com

you'll notice a small bug (large bug, d'oh) where this build will only send one mail at a time even if you have more than that in the outbox. i am fixing. it'll say "sending mail failed!" but don't worry, it sent. you will see that it was moved to the sent mail box and it did go out.

EDIT: bug fixed

...So don't hit the 'send' button ten or twelve times, like I do...it'll send the same message every time and bug the hell out of all your friends.

no it won't :P
as soon as it sends a mail it moves it from the outbox to the sentmail folder.

I installed this on my XT tonight and just couldn't get it to work :(

The problem is, it doesn't seem to want to connect to the email server.

LEETIRC works, so I know it is joining the network okay.

I know the email accounts are working, as I tried two (my own domain, plus an @inbox.com one) in Outlook.

Any suggestions? I've had to pack up for tonight (it's midnight here) but I'll have another go sometime this weekend :)

they're not SSL or some weird port are they? check the settings, and this client doesn't support SSL so you're out of luck if they require it! i've had a few guys on my IRCd test it, and it seemed to work well for them.

what is the hostname outlook has stored for the account? did you ping it exactly the same as it is there to get the IP?

I guess I should give this a try. I've just been working on migrating all my e-mail back to dos. I used to just download raw files and take care of the rest with utilities and *.bats. Sitll, I should look at your program just in case.

A funny thing happened last week. My old favourite, Marc Resl's netmail, didn't work so I was trying every other dos MTA in the world that I could get my hands on to see which ones would connect to the two servers that I need. None did. Several days of frustration later, I finally gave up and installed an FTP server in my linux box so I could get mail through there onto the dos machine. The next morning I started cleaning up and archiving all my newly collected programs. Before I moved the first one into an archive, just by chance really, I just ran the executable to see if it needed anything else to just run .... it worked!!! Then I wen't back and tried another program... it worked too! I finally figured out that my isp was having problems and had been fiddeling with stuff. That kinda p****d me off. I (wrongly) expect the professionals to have their shit together, us amateurs have a hard enough time on our end. The good side of course is that I found a lot of stuff I never would have looked for... and learnt a couple of things too. :)

Maybe it's getting too late but it just hung. Ctrl-C didn't work and I had to reboot. The message at the bottom is "Closing any previously open TCP/IP sockets ... and there it sits. I'm running it on drive G: with a 0x60 packet vector and 596K free ram (I run a lot of TSRs). Any ideas? I'll try again tomorrow, maybe it's something simple. :)

Sorry nobody answered. I haven't used Arachne for several years now, but it sure is a great graphical browser. I used to hang around on the Arachne list for a while. I think that there is a plugin that works for mail with it. I doubt that Mike's program will intergrate without some fiddeling but you should check it out and let us know!

Thinks: This stuff isn't exactly "vintage", however it is still very useful in keeping old computers useful. :)
