I have three 1541 drives of the type with the "turn-down" handle. Both drives in use have cooling fans located atop the cooling grills in the rear. My drive #8 started malfunctioning after about 1.5 hours of intermittent use. After allowing 24 hours, I plugged it back in and it works OK. Could the drive mechanism overheated? Should I seek out an alignment program?

here is a good link for troubleshooting commodore stuff:

what problems was your drive having, specifically?
it's probably not the best way, but i find if you format a floppy, it will tend to get your drive back in alignment, after it finishes banging around in there.
