In older times the family name was a combination of the fathers name and "son". So Anders surname means, literary, son of Carl. This practice is not used any more in Sweden, but it is in Iceland.

If you were female, the name would be Father/Mother + daughter: Carlsdotter. Not so common since you now usually get your name from your father.
