Ok with the Atari thread doing well I thought I’d ask about what Commodore's you guys own..:)
What commodore computers do you own and which is your favorite and why?
Mine has to be the C64 just because its popularity doesn’t seem to be waning and still has a very strong following today and it was my first proper computer back in the early 80’s (very close second the Amiga1200)
My collection:-
Commodore VIC-20 x 4pcs 1 MIB
Commodore 64 (bread bin) x 4pcs 1 MIB 1 BNIB
Commodore 64C x 2pcs 1 x NIB
Commodore 16 MIB
Commodore Plus4 MIB
Amiga 500
Amiga 500+ MIB
Amiga 600 x 4pcs
Amiga 1200HD x 5pcs 2 x MIB, 2 x with 4mb, 1 with CF Hard drive
Amiga CD32
1541 x 3pc 1 x BNIB
C2N or simular x 8pcs 4 MIB
Cheers...

All computers are PAL and loose unless otherwise stated.
Computers
1x VIC-20 "two-prong" (boxed)
2x VIC-20CR (one NTSC, one PAL)
1x C64 "breadbox" (boxed)
3x C64C (one boxed, two loose)
1x SX-64 (NTSC)
1x C128 (boxed)
1x C128D (not sure if it is D or DCR.. still a bit confused)
1x TED prototype motherboard (broken)
1x PET 3032
1x PET 4032
1x PET 8032-SK
1x CBM-II 610/256K (logically 620 but not labeled as such)
1x CBM-II B500 (predecessor to the 610, quite similar)
1x CBM-II 710/128K
1x Amiga 1200 (boxed)
Drives and other notable peripherals
2x 1541-II (one boxed, one loose)
1x 2031
1x 8250
1x 8250LP
1x Corvus IEEE hard drive system (6 MB)
a handful of 1530/1531 tape recorders
a pile of broken 3040/4040 drives.. dunno if you count garbage?
Well, plus some other bits and pieces like cartridge expanders and custom cartridges, 3rd party external floppy drives to the Amiga, modern storage devices like the uIEC.
From the list above, you may notice on purpose I have not picked up any working Commodore 16 or Plus/4 computer, basically because I disregard them as dead ends in the history of Commodore. Bil Herd is a cool guy though, and the TED prototype may be one of the most valuable pieces in my collection despite being non-functional.
My favorite Commodore obviously is the VIC-20. It was my first computer, then I spent many years on the C64 but returned to the VIC in the mid 1990s and haven't regretted it a bit.

Hi carlsson,
Wow! most impressive.
I thought before I joined here I had a large collection but you guys have awesome collections.
Re: VIC20 This was my first ever computer too. I bought it back in (I think) 1980 but couldn’t afford much software for it. Still holds a very special place in my youth though.:)

And then there's the absolute shitload of peripherals that I have laying around.
My favourite? I don't really know, never was much of a Commodoreguy. The Plus4 is nice since it's quite a bizarre machine, not useful for much though. The C16 is cool because it's black :). I'd probably have to say the C64 though since it's the one I've played around with the most.

Ok,
A very modest Commodore collection compared to some here
1 x 3032 Pet (now living thanks to Carlsson and others on this forum)
1 x Vic 20
1 x C64
1 x C64c with 1541-II drive
1x SX-64 portable
1 x Amiga 500 (1MB)
The 3032 would have to be the favourite. Such a cool, retro looking case and the green screen and all. The SX is really something too.

Hi,
1x VIC-20 (boxed)
1x C64 "breadbox"
1x PET 3008 (not currently working but thanks to carlsson and cosam could be fighting fit soon).
With only 3 commodores I feel somewhat inadequate but I am looking for a Amiga 500.

Olds-kool: The VIC-1001 was released in Japan in the second half of 1980, the VIC-20 introduced on CES January 1981 and released later that year. I think the majority of sales were in the first half of 1982. I don't own a VIC-1001 much because I think they're way too expensive compared to what you get.

You’re probably correct but I did not buy it through normal distribution outlets.
My VIC-20 came from a computer show held at The Barbican Centre here in the UK it was the last day or so and some of the companies were selling their stuff off.
I’m sure it was either 80 or 81 it’s hard to remember as I was only around 10 years old. It must have been a very early model because there weren’t in the shops at that time...
I don’t know what happened to it my mum probably threw it out 25 years ago!. I wish I kept it now :(

And you say you’re not much of a Commodore guy!
I think it’s safe to say you are an "Uber collector"
Agreed about the C64, its popularity is extremely strong today. Not bad for a computer that’s over 27 years old.

My collection is also a lot smaller than some of the ones that have been listed, but I'm happy with it all the same.
CPUs:
1x PET 4032 "Fat 40" (mystery function ROM included... some day I will figure out what it's for)
1x SX-64 (first computer ever, dad bought it for the family in 1984)
2x C64c
2x C128, both with 64k VRAM mod
Drives:
1x Blue Chip 128
1x 1541-II
1x MSD-1 single drive (works with both IEEE-488 and IEC)
2x 1571
2x 1581 — newly acquired, dunno yet whether they work
Peripherals:
1x 1902A monitor
1x mystery Amiga-badged monitor
2x Koala Pad (no styluses) — am working on a GEOS driver to use these as trackpads, though having two is overkill and I'll probably get rid of one
1x 1351 mouse (works great!)
1x 1670 1200 baud modem
misc. joysticks
Got an MPS-803 printer too but I'll probably get rid of it... no source for paper or ink and they're apparently not very good anyway.
Also got JiffyDOS on about half the units, with parts to do the rest (except for the Blue Chip 128, that one's only available from Maurice Randall and we all know how likely that isn't).
Wow, that was a longer list than I thought it would be.
Wish list:
dual PET drive, preferably (as long as I am only wishing, I don't have the budget) one of the 8" or quad density 5¼" ones — I almost got a 2040 this week, but I ran out of time to pay for it. Might get another chance though, if no one else buys it off my benefactor before I can get back to him.
PET hard drive (hey, may as well dream BIG if I'm dreaming at all)
µIEC unit from Jim Brain
C2N232 (I think that's what they're called — goes on the tape port and connects to a PC serial port)

Forgot to list my favourite. Am split between C128 (most flexible and fun to program), SX-64 (nostalgia value), and PET Fat 40 (most "novel" to modern sensibilities, and I'm guessing most interesting to hardware-mod).

Yeah, it's funny to see how large others collections are vs your own. I always feel dwarfed, but then again you have some of the top folks here collecting specifics so it's just good to know the stuff is out there and being preserved.
(3) CBM Kim-1 (can I count those? ;-) ).. don't remember enough about them to remember the revs off the top of my head.
CBM PET 8032
Vic-20
Commodore 64
Commodore 64C
Commodore 16
Commodore 128
Commodore Plus/4
Commodore 128D
Commodore sx64
Commodore PC-10 (10 or 20 I can't remember)
Amiga 1000
Amiga 500
Amiga 2000
Amiga 2000HD
Amiga 2500
Amiga 3000 (D)
Amiga 3000 (T)
Amiga 1200
Think that's it..lol I remembered a few seeing other peoples lists though. How sad is that?
My favorite? geez.. hm.. I really like the Amiga 2000 since it was the one I gamed on the most. sx64 would be a good second though, I mean first color portable computer and it's compatible with c64 cartridges/floppies, etc. That's a pretty awesome system.

1x C128D (not sure if it is D or DCR.. still a bit confused)If the case is plastic it should be a 128D, if it's metal then i should be a 128DCR. But the easiest way to determine is to open it up an see. If it has the disk drive's controller on a separate board it's a 128D, if all is on one board it's the DCR...

Of course you can :-) , it's a single-board computer.

I saw a revision E on the German epay a while ago, but it went for more than 600 Euro's -a LITTLE too rich for me-

I was joking about them being MOS ;-) I tried a bit to get a good collection of Commodore since I do like them and we still have an Amiga group here in town, but you know the whole collector problem with never having enough or never truly being complete. Then of course a friend Bo is here in town too (http://zimmers.net) so it makes my feeble attempts kinda useless lol
Though I like that he dedicated his collecting to one company. Certainly gets you closer to happiness than myself starting with anything. Though I like to think I have a lot of historically significant "firsts" atleast in the collection.

It's not as big as it used to be...
1 known working C-64 (and a bunch of broken ones)
1 C-128
Peripherals and stuff:
1 tape drive
2 1541 Floppy Drives
1 1541-II Floppy Drive
1 Printer (not sure what kind, but it's nice and small)
2 monitors (don't ask me what kind, they're in the garage right now)
1 home made XE-1541 Cable
1 Commodore mouse (I'm pretty sure I still have it)
1 Commodore B+W Scanner for Amiga (and I don't own an Amiga)
Used to own:
Vic-20
CBM with giant dual floppy drive
2 C-16s
1 Commodore mousepad
1 Commodore typewriter
I also own a genuine Commodore calculator and an unused Commodore notepad. I'm a fanboy :D

I'm not a collector, but somewhere in the basement there are:
3 or 4 ea. VIC-20, C-64, IEC disk drives and C2N tape drives
1 1/2 2001 PETs
1 8032
2 8050
1 MTU Visible memory graphic expansion board for PET
Misc. stuff for PET: ROM expanders, speech board, EPROM programmer, custom cables etc.
Boxes of books, tapes & disks etc.

Can you dump it, or at least peek the first few locations? Maybe we can figure out what it is.
Have you tried SYS36864 or 40960?
I'm sort of interested in compiling a list of all the optional ROMs out there.
Got an MPS-803 printer too but I'll probably get rid of it... no source for paper or ink and they're apparently not very good anyway.
Well, you probably won't find it at your local office supply house, but 8 1/2 x 11 continuous paper is still available and you can either reink the ribbons or reload it with a more available one.

Yes, it would be interesting to know what it does. One way would be to dump it in ASCII and see if you pick up any recognisable words, screen titles etc.

Wish list:
dual PET drive, preferably one of the 8" or quad density 5¼" ones
The 5.25" 8050 and 8250 drives are not too uncommon, they're just heavy. The 8" drives however are a whole mouthful of hen's teeth and you should be extremely lucky if you ever see one, much less get to buy one. I suppose if either of the 8" PET drives appear on eBay, it will go REALLY high.
PET hard drive (hey, may as well dream BIG if I'm dreaming at all)
µIEC unit from Jim Brain
C2N232 (I think that's what they're called — goes on the tape port and connects to a PC serial port)
Soon all these three may be solved in one wish, as Jim for the next run of uIEC devices considers both IEEE support and possibly optional C2N232 instead of just a dull cassette port connector. You may not consider the uIEC a hard drive but feature wise it comes very close.
The Commodore 9060 and 9090 hard drives however do exist. They are quite rare, far less common than a 8050/8250 but much more common than a 8" floppy drive. They use Tandon ST-506 type drives that appear to often go bad, and although you can replace those with Seagates of higher (unused) capacity, today I would consider the 9000 series HDDs just a collector's item.

And of course the necessary joysticks and so on.. I got a set of NOS wireless joysticks (with big antennas), manufactured in 1982 iirc. Not made by Commodore but a cool thing to have anyway :) Haven't used them yet, the "base station" uses 110V and I don't have an adapter. The joysticks themselves need 2 9 Volt batteries each ;)

Micom: I think the different shades of grey brown is more a matter of manufacture date and miscolouration than a change of specs. There are a few different motherboard revisions before the C64C model but other than cost reduction nothing really changed.
Marko Mäkelä on the cbm-hackers mailing list just mentioned some C64s are "$DE00 clean" which means the unconnected address space at $DE00-$DFFF on some C64s echo back the last bus/accumulator content without getting random noise into the data. Whether this was a feature or a random factor in production, I don't know. Also I'm not sure if a small difference like this can be found within the set of "breadboxes" or if it would be a change if the C64C models.

:'-( That sucks but having an Amiga 3000T from a friend who was an Amiga salesman I can understand why you may not feel like a hernia trying to move it heh. Everyone used to say they weighed like they were made of granite so he eventually sprayed some grey rhino coating on it so it looks like a big stone.
Was a sweet system though. He has a munged up copy (tv station didn't convert the audio for most of the interesting part) when he was on a local tv station demoing off the computer. He had about every drive you could in there (5.25, 3.5, syquest/zip (don't remember which), cdrom, back-up tape drive. Then had an emulator card in there so while he was loading Dpaint for a demo and doing something else he switched over to a new window and ran Windows 3.0 and loaded solitaire and I think paint or something and then windowed it and put it in the background while he returned to his Amiga animation demo.
It was great lol. er.. totally forgot why I commented. Let us know here if you do post it there or in this marketplace. That'll help ensure it goes to a good home.

first time my friend found one at the local dump along with joystick and Last Ninja Remix cart, but he wanted more cash for it then i had in my wallet so i decided to wait abit and buy it later, forgot all about it for like 6 months, and it ended up sold to some other guy. second chance was with the same friend when he bought a CIB from some auction site (to use as a hostage in some deal with me with some Nintendo stuff we had going) but it never happened so we decided to wait on it until i got the cash to buy it from him but then suddenly some 2-3 weeks after he got the urge for a Yamaha motorcycle so he sold this C64GS too.
its simply destiny that i should never own one of those. :(

I never really understood the C64GS
Honestly, I'm not sure Commodore mgmt did neither. If they really had wanted to counter the again successful video games, they probably should have looked at a way to drastically cut costs in the Amiga (500). Perhaps not made it cartridge based, but a slimmed down unit with 512K, floppy drive but no keyboard or expansion options. It just might have worked.
The fun part is that both Atari (XEGS) and Amstrad (GX-4000) also repackaged somewhat aged 8-bit computers as video game systems. I think all three fared just as bad.

Got an MPS-803 printer too but I'll probably get rid of it... no source for paper or ink and they're apparently not very good anyway.
Don't get rid of it. You can still find ribbons for the MPS-803 all over the internet. They run about $5 USD.
As for paper, regular old 8.5x11 works just fine since the MPS 803 was friction-feed.
Yeah, its slow and it sucks, but in 1983 it was Awesome...

You’ve got some really nice Commodore’s there..
I wish I had some of the higher end machines but they don’t come up to often here in the UK and when they do they aren’t cheap. I’d settle for a processor card for my A1200, if they didn’t cost an arm and a leg. Still it’s nice to see how the other half live.:)

I snagged my Amiga gear years ago when it was much cheaper, would not pay current prices for what I have these days and there is NONE locally outside of the C64s you tend to trip over on the street.
I wish I had started collecting IBM XT's years ago when they were around and worthless.
Win some and lose some.

I know what you mean re: XT's, years ago they were piling them up at the recycling centers and now you don’t see any at all...

Thanks :)
Took a while to gather them all
Most are bought outside Sweden since the prices here are ridiculous...but itäs far easier getting rare Amiga items here than vintage PC parts...even vintage PC games are very hard to come buy...I think it's mostly because of effective recycling and people here didn't so much respect for PC's when they were getting old and not being of any use
Use to have a loaded Amiga 2000 also but I sold it a month ago

I will never be a collector at this rate! After browsing through this post I see why - you guys are hoarding all the good stuff!
Seriously, some really nice collections to be proud of, that's for sure :)
My meager holdings in Commodore are:
1 - VIC-20
1 - C-128
1 - Plus/4
Commodore peripherals to keep things humming.
Decent collection of Commodore specific magazines, disks and books from the 80's.
Back in time I once owned a C-16, and spent many years with a C-64. Those are long gone, but my current units fulfill those slots nicely.
I foolishly gave away (to Goodwill), an Amiga 600, but then I was never a big Amiga fan - but I bought it brand new on sale, cheap, back when they were trying to dump them.

As with a few others here, Commodore was my first two systems (vic-20, then C64) so they're still my favourites :)
vic-20 (several, a couple boxed)
C64 (several colours, models, a couple boxed)
C128 (a couple, one boxed)
C16 (one boxed)
C +4 (one boxed, one not)
Amiga 500
Amiga 2500 (toaster card etc)
Amiga 4000
PC-20
1701 monitor
1702 monitor (several)
1084 monitor
1084s monitor
CM-141 monitor
1902 monitor
Datasettes (several)
1541-II (a couple)
1541 (several colours, etc)
1581
SFD 1001
Fair number of carts, other peripherals, and a couple printers. I have a pretty decent collection of boxed software, especially the old educational stuff put out by Commodore (the cassettes in the coloured binders, lol) and a few others, courtesy of a really good find a few years ago. I have never had much luck finding PET stuff here though. I could have gone afield more for it I guess, but you know how the money starts to flow for shipping...
I'd still love to get a C128D, those have eluded me thus far :)

1 C64
1 VIC-20
1 1541 Disk Drive
1 1660 Modem 300
1 1802 Monitor

1 1541 (I cant remember what's wrong with it)
1 Hacked C64 DTV computer (based on Jeri Ellsworth's 30-in-1 game system. Has some issues booting correctly)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Non-functioning stuff; scrapped for parts:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1 C64 (I dropped a screwdriver on a voltage regulator. Short circuited the whole damn thing. Some chips were salvaged)
1 1541 (totally non-functioning. Torn apart for the chips & case)

I know its not much, but its enough to keep me entertained. I also have the boxes for two of my C64's, the VIC-20, and one for a 1541.

Do you like that 1802?

Do you like that 1802?
Oh, very yes (lawl). I got it when I bought the machine when I was 14. It has 3 sets of inputs: monochrome, standard av (mono sound), and commodore composite (luma, chroma, audio). Great monitor- its good for more than just using a C64 or VIC20; You can attach game systems, as long as they dont use a coaxial cable for output.
Mine is missing the front door that covers the input switch, color and tint adjustments, and volume control. But I kinda like the imperfection.
If I didn't receive the monitor when I bought that first C64, I would have had NO idea how to connect it to a TV, and my parents would not have been happy if I tried that (they fought me tooth and nail when I decided to buy the whole setup).
Unknown_K
May 2nd, 2009, 12:21 AM
The commodore composite is the same as s-video, they just break the chroma and luma into 2 RCA jacks instead of using the normal Svideo plug. You can buy cables that have svideo on one end and the 2 RCA jacks on the other for connecting equipment to the 1802.
I have two of the 1802's and one is missing the cover like yours. Both work and were given to me free with some C64 gear from freecycle. I kind of wanted a 1702 since I think they looked better, or better yet another Amiga compatible 1080 or 1084 but they were better then nothing.
A monitor is better then a TV for a C64, hope you have the good c64 video cable and not the regular composite one.

Yes, Cedar Rapids, IA, USA
The 264 and the first C65 were personal gifts from CMD, when they took over a CBM liquidated warehouse. They were given on the premise I would take them to shows and demonstrate them.
The second 65 was serendipity. It was part of a large stash I picked up in WI a few years back.

Although it has been mentioned before, the 110V NTSC SX-64 is at least twice as common as the 220-240V PAL model and generally also is reflected in market price ex. shipping.

My Commodore collection, in order of age (I think...):
PET 2001-8N (standard keyboard, PETSCII key markings, no cassette)

SX-64
Plus/4
C16
C128

All are working, except the SX-64 is a bit intermittent. Might need repair at some point.
My favorite? Man, that's hard to say. The VIC-20 was the first computer I ever owned (not the one I have, but the model). I love the PET for nostalgia, as I used a 2001 in high school for programming class. The C64 made me quite a bit of money in my retail days. :p As someone mentioned, the C16 has a cool color.
But on balance, the C128DCR is probably my favorite, because it's 3 machines in one, and among the last of the great 8-bit systems. I'm also a CP/M enthusiast, so that's a plus.
Cheers!

well, I already hat around 15 PET 2001 (with chicklet keyboard) and I sold some.. I do restoration of these machines.. I'm specialized to repair PET 2001, SX-64 and Apple Lisas.. often I buy broken PET 2001 and put from 2 one working machine together...
sadly there is a little distance between here and Texas..I come from Austria/Europe ;-)
I have PETs 2001 in all variations: with white tape recorder, black one, with blue frame / black frame, blue label / black label and all variations also with the early PET motherboards.. so I only have 2 or 3 machines that are the same.
I always try to find collectors for trading / exchanging stuff.. but there are not so many around who have what I'm searching for..

Please give us some examples of what you would be looking for in your Commodore collection. Prototypes? Special editions? Localized versions? 3rd party upgraded machines? I can't help but wonder if the Japanese C64 is among those 15x C64's and if there is at least one VIC-1001 among the 5x VIC-20's.
Is the CBM 510 rather a B500? I suppose P500 is much less common as it pretty much never got released.
