As I said in multiple other posts, I just got a win98 tower pc, uninstalled all of the junk on there, and the used space was 2.5Gig. I re-installed Windows yesterday, and the used drive space is some 300megabytes!! I could fit that on a CD!!! Did I do something wrong, or is Windows 98 just really small, and there was hidden crap all over my PC?
On a related note, whats the most bloated OS you've come across? (vista is the biggest I've seen, but 98 has the most advertising crap. 'connect to compuserve', 'set up AOL', the explorer channel bar, and when you start up HyperTerm, you get all sorts of crap.)
Maybe I should've put this in Rants...

Windows 1.01 needed about 1.5Mb...
Windows 2.03 needed about 2-4Mb...
Windows 3.00 needed about 6-10Mb...
Windows 3.10 needed about 8-20Mb...
Windows 3.11 needed about 8-22Mb...
Windows 95 needed about 50-100Mb...
Windows 98 needed about 250-500Mb...
Did you make sure to clean out the folder of temporary internet files, other temporary files (the TEMP directory), all the scrap-files left of by the uninstalled programs and all the personal files you might have had on it?
The temporary internet one escapely counts. You can set it to store no more than 80Mb, 50Mb, anything you like, however, it will allways end up storing gigabytes of files.

Yes, Win98 was that small :) (or big, depending on what perspective you want to take). It took up a pretty big chunk of a 500MB or 1 GB HD at the time though.

Yup, as the others said that's around the default size. It'll get larger once you have other stuff (patches and drivers) installed accordingly but a default install isn't that bad.
docred is right though, it's small now but at the time when there were only 4GB drives for $300 it wasn't that special in size.

I installed a -complete- set of WinME into a 512M compact flash and there was still the space for doom quake and some other good game.
With the help of an unattended cleaning software like DUSTBUSTER (no more supported, anyway) i removed about 250M of crap, included unnecessary drivers (when connecting another peripheral, it's necessary to insert WinME CD) so a WinME install may fit in a 256M card :D
See ya!
