What is that jumper on the far left? My cd writer (which Windows won't recognize as a cd-RW) has that, and it has a jumper that was on it (I took it off), and I have no idea what it does. Anything?

Its what it says; cable select.
In that case, the position on the cable decides if the drive is master or slave.

I prefer the hardwired solution (selecting master or slave manually) because it doesn't always work like it is supposed too- depending on the cable and the drives.

no,no that cluster of pins on the far left of the drive itself. That isn't labeled.

Sorry, I ate to many taco's.. I guess I have the taco flue! ;)
On most drives I know that are 'factory reserved' ones.. not that that helps you or would make you less curious..

the "most likely" answer is that it is a serial interface, used by the factory to test and or flash the firmware of teh drive to set it to different regions.

test it without the jumper, any difference?

test it without the jumper, any difference? There is no jumper. :) It just looks like you could put one there because the pins are the same spacing. I too am curious what those pins are for. Perhaps luckybob is right and it's a serial interface.

My guess is it's a JTAG interface. Certainly there are several CD-ROM controller chips that are JTAG-capable. 6 pins would be about right, too.
