I really like the different icons on the index and the bold text in the individual forums - very easy to see where any new posts are at a glance. However, now and again it appears that the forums suddenly decide for themselves that I've read everything, while there are still plenty of unread posts. Checking through the "last post" timestamps isn't really my idea of fun...

So is it just me or is anyone else having this problem? Is there some knob I can twiddle in my profile or browser(s) to stop this happening? I can imagine I'm asking a lot of whatever mechanism it is that determines what's read or not as I do access the forums from three or four different machines/devices at the moment...

One other minor yet related gripe: if I read all the posts in the thread and return to the main index without reloading the forum index (or manually marking the forum read) the icon on the index indicates there are new posts, even though I've read everything. Is that just down to how the vBulletin software works or is there some option I can enable to get around this?

Not whining, just wondering ;-)

Something in the software times out and it updates your last visited time to the current moment. I have gotten in the habit of going to the bottom of the front page, clicking on "mark all read", then I do "new posts", it says there aren't any, and I click show me the last 24hrs link. I mentally make a note of the time I last really read everything.

The software does try to update your last visit time automatically. I have noticed, because of the way web stuff works, that it can be several minutes before it figures out that you are gone. So, next time you come in, there can be several posts that were updated after you left but before the software figured out you had gone. Meaning, you can miss those posts as being new.

So, once again, see my above procedure. This problem is why I originally started marking everything as read then just reviewing the last 24 hrs. A few days later I would figure out that I had missed a few updated posts.

I usually start my VCF sessions by clicking on "new posts". I then browse through the list, clicking on "next/previous" page if the list is long (this does not seem to reset the list). The topics I find interesting, I open in a new tab, thereby maintaining the list of new posts.

It seems to have something to do with midnight. The bug may be that the server mixes up the local time with the server time, so it read our last online time as sometime in the future (europe is some hours before the server's timezone)...

If my theory is right, users living some hours after the server's timezone (Pacific Ocean/New Zealand/Hawaii) will get post they've read marked as "un-read".
