I put Debian 3.1 Sarge on my Toshiba yesterday. After getting help with Mike Chambers, I got it all working and looking fancy with X and KDE. Now, I'd like to have sound working in here, but it tells me that it cannot open /dev/dsp and will be redirecting all sound request to the null device. So does anyone have a sound driver for this model laptop?

Perhaps this would help you (http://www.freakazoid.org/reference/tosh/)? From what little I can find, the sound chip in the 400CDT seems to be the same ESS 688 as the 430CDT.

This has nothing to do with drivers, but what processor/clock speed is in that laptop?

75MHz Pentium. I'll also get around to messing with the stuff on that site later, but in the 5 seconds when i tried it, it didn't work.

"It" tells you? Who is "it"? I presume you tried to run some program that was looking for /dev/dsp. Do you have ALSA tools and utils?
