I have a Win 95 CD which refuses to install on a Compaq LTE which has 3.1 on it. ISTR seeing a comment about difficulties installing a new OS on Compaqs. Anyone encounter this problem. I know I used the CD to upgrade several other machines. It's the OEM not the upgrade version.

I had windows on an LTE once but I installed over a blank harddrive. The only thing I can think of is that it sees an os there and doesn't want to go on top of it. I would delete a few system files (command.com, config, sys, autoexec.bat), copy them on a floppy and then try it. Will it boot to the cd?

Lawrence,

Does the LTE have the diagnostic partition on the drive? Perhaps that's interfering with the installation.
I'm assuming that the CD is installed in the SmartStation? Have you tried copying 95 files to the hard drive and installing from there? Oh yeah, how much mem is installed?

The LTE has 12mb memory. It does have the diagnostic partition. Perhaps that is the problem. I tried a direct connect installation some time ago and more recently a Backpack CDdrive. The LTE starts the installation and then says it is the wrong installation disk.
I'm going to try installing a compaq Softpaq that I thought was only for LTEs with W95 installed. Possibly it modifies the diagnostic partition.
Haven't done anything with the Smartstation yet other than exploring its porting capabilities.
