Yes, I have found a workaround for the sf314 drive for the atari. I found pinouts and all the odd numbered pins are ground and all the even numbered ones are the SAME as an IBM compatible! I'm just gona swap the drives out of my case.

So I need a strict 720k fdd. If all goes well with that, I'll try it with a 1.44 and se how it goes, but I think the 520's os is limited there.

Ahm, I'd try this too.

Buy or trade. Not a problem.

Teac only makes 1.44MB drives now, but they sell a model that can be dumbed down to behave as a 720K drive. They don't support the modification officially, but they do give you the instructions on which traces to cut and which connections to jumper to do it. That's pretty good in my book.

So check their website .. The drive new was only around $30. You may have to go digging through their tech support docs to find the drive model number.

I think I remember that I have a few jumpered floppy drives, I'll look up the specs for them, so I might take this ad down and put on up telling people how to do it instead of buying a specialty item (the SF314). But for now I wanna buy a 720k floppy drive.

The fdd that I have isn't going to work. I found the Teac for $15 plus shipping so I suppose I'll be gettng that one.

mbbruteman,
is that the drive you were referring to? I haven't ordered it yet. Am I reading it right, or is there no equivalent pin to pin 34 on the 1.44, disk change?

I was about to post a link to a thread on atariage about it, but seems the server won't cooperate.

I don't know the drive model number off the top of my head .. the next time I'm home I'll dig it out.

If you are impatient, go cruising through the support pages on Teac's web site. One of the models of 1.44MB drive can be dumbed down. There was more to it than just changing pin assignments on the cable. (Actually, the cable had nothing to do with it). It was more along the lines on cutting traces and installing jumpers on the logic board.

Oh, I'm not impatient about it, I just wanna get my facts straight. I'll check the pages and see what I can find.

Impatient meant, not wanting to wait for my admitted slowness. :-)

The information on the conversion to dumb a new 1.44MB drive down to behave like a 720KB drive all of the time is supposed to be here:

http://www.teac.com/DSPD/support/floppy_drives/floppy_drives.htm

However, teac.com has not been responding for a few days.

It's not responding now either. Ah well. I'm still lookin-up. I have a drive, epson SMD340 that is supposed to work with the st machines. I'm still finding out about it.
