we seem to have simlar machines, i've always wanted a portfolio, but i came across my HP95lx instead( i think theres a pattern here, i want a certain machine, like a Sun or a Portfolio, but find a HP thats simular, like the Apollo and the 95lx) have you tried to install anything in it yet? not sure about the Atari, but my 95lx communicates well with Hyperterminal.

I recently acquired a Portfolio with case and several expansion cards. I have yet to really put it through its paces though...

It's possible. I'll have pictures posted of it soon on my Website.

You said "was it that one on ebay a few weeks ago?". Since I don't know what "one" you're referring to, I said it's possible, meaning yes, I did buy it on eBay, but I have no way of knowing if you're thinking of the same one. You should re-read how and what you wrote so you're better able to understand where your confusion is.

They've been selling one or two a week on eBay lately, mostly from UK & Austrailia. "The one" is just not descriptive enough for a definitive answer...

I don't remember what I paid, but it was well under $100 shipped (I'm thinking it was in the $60 - $70 range), with multiple RAM cards, a BASIC card, carrying case, parallel and serial adapters, etc. Truly a great deal. Sometimes you just get lucky with this stuff.

the RAM cards tend to be pricy sometimes

If no one else has the instruction manual, then I'd be happy to scan it. I also have the quick reference card. I don't have time to scan them this week, but perhaps after VCF next month...

Also, in case it's not widely known (but I think it is), the Portfolio was used in the movie "Terminator 2: Judgment Day"... seriously, go rent it and see for yourself!

I can also scan the HP-95LX section of the Guide to HP Handheld Calculators and Computers.

Although there is lots of data for both systems out there on the web...

Well, this one sold for <$20.00, which is prolly more of a fluke than a trend, since they seem to have been consistantly knocking down >$50.00 lately.

I think variable prices is a common phenomena on eBay. Whether it's an uneducated seller doing a ridiculously low BIN price on something quite valuable or the occasional lucky hit, unless you're in a particular rush or you know something won't turn up again for a long, long time, it's often best to just track things over a matter of weeks or months to get the approximate price you're looking for.

By the way, I checked my Atari Portfolio finally and was wrong about having the BASIC cartridge. I confused having it with wanting it. I actually only have the Portfolio, serial and parallel adapters, various 64K and 128K memory cards, and the file manager card.

I used to have a portfolio, they're fantastic little machines. I got mine, though, devoid of any accessories (not even memory cards) so on the repeated occasions that I crashed it (;)) I lost all my data. Not like there was anything important on there... I wrote quite a few fun batch files though. I hope to get a new one someday as my one broke . Cabling trouble between the screen and the main bit, I think. The case was completely falling apart anyway. I held it together, at some point, with rubber bands. That was fun.

Bye for now, and RIP portfolio,
MoonShadow

I've just acquired one of these, but I've found it a bit weird in certain ways it operates... For example, after powering down either by command, or by waiting until the auto power off goes into effect, I can't get the beast up and running again no matter what I do. Only way I've found is to take the batteries out and put them back again, but that loses anything I've put into it. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Na really? Yeah I know - I knew since I saw the movie in 1991,
bad boy John hacking into the ATM machine. I nearly got myself
one of these machines back then, which is why I remember.

So seriously, I was just wonderning if anyone has been
successful in plugging in some kind of Disk Drive? Or is it
simply out of the question?

i've heard of Zip Drives being plugged into them. They chop the Zip Disk up into 32 mb chunks.

Shoka,

You have, I presume, tried pressing [Fn]+[O] to power it on? I'm fairly sure that worked...
The problem could be a faulty function ( [Fn] ) or O key, or it could be to do with the suspend system.
What language is the keyboard? Mine was German...
I think if you take the batteries out then put them back in again fairly quickly then the portfolio won't lose its data. Also check that the batteries are good.

Best wishes,
MoonShadow

terminator pic (http://80.192.34.202/Sample%20Files%20&%20Templates/terminator.jpg)

i also recently-ish got one from ebay. from the previous posts there does seem to be some price difference from the uk / us.
i paid £12 for mine, no cables though. i did get the software on floppies though, both 3" and 5" disks and the manual.

could do with a way to get stuff on there though.
