the three people thought about this problem

the first person suggested

"put a car near the pit, then we can easily drive anyone who fell in it to hospital"

the second person said

"we will put a warning sign near it, to warn people"

The third and final person then said...

"no, neither of those"

"the solution is to move the pit nearer to the hospital!"

But what do I know, maybe modern Arabic is written left to right for some practical reasons? I know Chinese used to be written from top to bottom, but many newspapers now write from left to right (maybe due to how the word processing software is written).

Had a friend in college (mid 1980s) who was from Iran. Since the hostage crisis was still fresh in everyone's mind, he told those who asked that he was from Persia. He showed me how to write my name in Farsi (phonetically), it was done right to left then.

Can't think of who it was now, but one of the early cultures alternated left to right and right to left on each line. Kinda like plowing a field. Hmm...might be fairly easy to learn to read, but it would sure make computers difficult.

Isn't Hebrew right to left?

Is it Arabic or Hebrew (or both?) that marks vowels with dots above the consonants, and once the dots are lost, the script becomes almost impossible to read?

dongfeng
June 19th, 2006, 05:42 AM
For Chinese, it used to be written top to bottom, right to left (following the ancient method of writing on bamboo). Most "everyday" Chinese is written horizontally left-to-right but a lot of books (fiction, etc) are written in the traditional way :)

I thought maybe standardized computer programs had made people start to write in the other direction. Thanks to Unicode, about all writing systems should be possible to represent on modern computers, and then only the text direction and other special details would differ between making e.g. Microsoft Word in English, Swedish, Russian, Arabic, Chinese or Klingon.

Well, in Latin alphabet, there is a set of vowels: A E I O U plus a bunch more in various languages based on the same alphabet, like Å Ë Î Ō Ų. If you remove the decorations, part of the letter still remains and the text would still be barely readable.

Unless I'm mistaken, Arabic writing consists of what we in Latin terms would refer to as consonants (B D F K L M N P R S T V etc), and by adding dots or lines above or below the writing, you indicate vowel sounds? I.e. the vowel itself is more of a decoration than an independent part of the writing system. If those dots are hard to read, it is difficult to see if there should be a vowel sound, and in that case which one?

Not that it matters for vintage computers which usually were hard-coded into a US ASCII character set anyway..;)
