From my inbox:

I have two old teletype machines in my basement.
We live in near Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The
machines were here when we moved in and we are
currently getting ready to move. We have
absolutely no use for them. If anyone lives in
the area and wants to come and get them, we will
be glad to give them to someone. We will NOT
ship them anywhere - we don't have the time to do
that. Feel free to contact us if you want to
come and pick them up. The previous owner of the
house was a hand radio operator and his family
left them in the basement when we bought the
house. We look forward to hearing from you.

Check out http://www.vintage-computer.com/asr33.shtml for the details. Scroll to the visitor comments at the end.

This should go quick. :)

Weep is right. Just look at those paper tape reader/punches. Like Mike B recently stated, a bit too primative  I do miss the "chunk chunk chunk" sometimes (the print head would jump up and down as it advanced the paper, so you would get a nice cycle of noises coming out of the thing). Not so nice if it was 6 feet from your desk all day long.

don't i know, I did my first computing on an asr33, it was a love-hate relationship, but I miss them!

I might be interested in one of these puppies, but I don't have much room for them.

Sure brings back semi-fond memories of my first duty station where they were still running old Mod 28 ARS's!

Baudot at a whopping 65 baud.

Knew a school trained tech on these puppies who went to work in Vegas fixing slot machines!

Hey guys, hate to be a "teletype grouch" but has anyone (that includes the host of silent lurkers) actually done anything about picking these babies up, or are they currently on their way to the dump.

I know the ASR33 is the Ford T of the computing world, there's not many ford Ts left anymore. If I was in the US, I'd be on my way now, no-matter how many 1000s of miles.

Surely someone is local, with a bit of garage space to give them even a temporary home.

Well, no way I'm driving 2,346 miles to pick up one or two ASRs. I have dogs to feed, after all.

Nige, take a flight to Massachusetts and then take the cargo boat home... perhaps you need to rent a truck to get to the boat. If you leave today, you might make it home for Christmas, or am I overestimating the speed of shipping vessels?

OK Fine, but you get my point, There has to be somebody!, and Chuck, Take the dogs with you, it's probably a nice trip.

Actually, it is easy for us british to underestimate the size of the US, however due to the miserable state of our overcrowded roads it takes almost as long to get from one end of our country to the other, as it does for you.

The other thing I've noticed looking on Ebay in the US, is that you have much-more, more-interesting stuff than we do, up for grabs, if that's an accurate reflection of techno gear availability in general, I guess ASR33s are two a penny over there.

And carlsson, If there was only me to think about, I'd be doing the trip.

If it wasn't a 6-7 hour trip, and I really needed a TTY I'd probably say
Ok. But I don't need one and don't want to drive 6 hours each way for
one. Good luck, someone near should speak up and take em.
