O.K. guys, the AT&T 6300 I'm using now has DOS 5 on it... It has a ST-251(or something like that) in it, and I need to know how upgradeable it is... It's got A modem, a HD/HD card, and what I think is some sort of calculus card with like a billion chips, and a large battery....I think It's calculus 'cause one row of chips say TEXAS INSTRUMENTS on them...then a row says KOREA and the other row is just numbers...I need to know what type of OS/SHELL I can safely put on this computer, and what hardrive I need to run Win 3.1x. Thankyou (FieldHippieRyan@aol.com)

Your "calculus card" is likely a RAM card or even more likely a multi-function card since it has a battery on it...

A typical multifunction board would include RAM, a clock/calendar, serial i/o and parallel i/o...

I'd pretty much be willing to bet you have a couple of rows of 8 or 9 4116 chipa and a couple of rows of 8 or 9 41256 chips... A DB-25m and a DB-29f connector also present...

Be sure to preserve any existing CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files along with the drivers required to make use of the clock/calendar chip, RAM disk, etc...

I'd say learn to like DOS, I think you'll run into too much trouble if you try to run windows on the thing... Doesn't windows need at least a '286?

By default, Win 3.1 'requires' a 286, because of the memory requirement. It cannot be run without some (256K??) Extended Memory.

Also, keep in mind that the 6300 ain't quite IBM-compatible, so use caution installing PC expansion hardware. Do your homework to determine compatibility (google).

The ST-251 is a 40Mb MFM (ST-506-compatible) drive, IIRC.
