I really like the Thermochron iButton.

It says it sends the data via :"Communicates to Host with a Single Digital Signal at 15.4kb or 125kbps Using 1-Wire Protocol"

Hmm, I wonder how easy this would be to get it hooked up to some old computers for temperature record keeping?
