I`ve noticed that the keyboard of my old Compaq is PS/2 .. at least it fits in my desktop`s PS/2 port.. so i plugged it into my desktop computer which runs windows xp. Nothing happens.

I restarted my PC and pressed DEL on my Compaq keyboard to enter bios . I was surprised to see it really works. I was happy i can use my old favourite keyboard with my desktop, but when windows was loading suddenly the leds turned off. Within windows it didn`t work anymore. Why ?

Can anyone tell me what can I do to make it work under Windows XP ?

Older keyboards tend to draw more voltage then modern System Boards like to output. Like back when I had my ChainTech MB, I couldn't use my IBM Model M because it took too much voltage. There's suppose to be something with resistors that can be done if that is the case here.

and how can you explain that i can use the keyboard in bios ? if the voltage was the problem.. i guess it wouldn`t work in bios either.

strange things can happen...:stern:

this keyboard works perfectly under linux (ubuntu)..now i'm pretty sure there`s no problem with my motherboard and the voltage it`s supplying..

i'm really confused right now.. any ideas to make this keyboard work under windows xp are really appreciated..

by the way..can anyone answer this question : why does it work almost everywhere but windows ? :stern:

Perhaps you need a custom driver that for some reason still remains in Linux (legacy) but modern XP has retired? Or that the keyboard can not be detected exactly which model it is, so in BIOS and Linux it works with some default settings, but Windows refuses to operate with an unknown keyboard?

hm.. i wanted to reinstall windows, put my disc into the drive, and when it came to boot from it (you know when the "Press any key to continue" message appears) i pressed enter on this keyboard and it started the setup. But , funny, when it came to the screen where you press enter to install windows suddenly my keyboard doesn`t work. So..even in the windows setup won`t work..

I guess i will have to forget this keyboard..or I should use it just with linux.

If you still have some suggestions, you`re free to post :p

If you can't find any other use of the Compaq keyboard, you can grow cress into it. ;)
