:)
Hi all. I'm a Xerox fan - specifically, I'm a fan of the Xerox D-machines (Dove, Daybreak, Dandelion etc), the Pilot/XDE/Viewpoint/InterLISP-D/Smalltalk environments they ran and the Mesa language they were mostly developed in. The Alto was before my time, the rebadged Suns after
I've set up a site dedicated to Mesa development - it's early days, but I'm adding more to it as time permits: http://www.apearson.f2s.com. Always interested to hear from fellow Xerox fans, especially if they've got code/manuals/hardware to throw at me :-)

Welcome to the VC Forums!
I'm sure you'll find at least a couple of other Xerox fans in the mix here!
Enjoy!

Ok, you've completely lost me. The only Xerox machines I'm familiar with are the Xerox 820s running under CP/M. Any similarity?
I've also played around with the 8/16, but only a little. Oh yeah, I have given myself a few hernias toting around some of thier big ol printers -- the ones with the (optional) copier built in. Remember those?

Whoops... D-machines... they were know as such within the company, probably not outside though (I used to work for Rank Xerox UK for a while).
I'm talking about the workstations they produced in the 70's and early 80's - the original "Star" system (aka 8010), the 6085, the 1186 AI workstation, the 1101, 1102 etc. Check out http://www.digibarn.com/friends/alanfreier/ for a potted history, pictures etc.
My personal favourite is the 6085 workstation, it was the first machine I really used in anger (sometimes literally, admittedly!) as a programmer after leaving college. Years ahead of its time. The software development environment was second to none - still holds it's head up high even when faced with today's IDEs.

Thank you for the very informative link. So, the D* machines were really the original Mac environment, predating the StarOffice machines?

Hi Pogo... another Xerox fan here. 6085s, 8010 and 8090 servers, and a Star (whose monitor has just died :-( ). Also 4045 printers and vast piles of Viewpoint floppies!
At one time I had a network of 3-4 6085s all running, hooked up to the 8090 Clearinghouse etc. server... this was a small portion of a former Logica network. They never purged the disks before throwing the machines... all kinds of interesting documents could be opened and read, including some pertaining to a certain court case they were involved in! ;-)
I'd be interested in bringing up an alternative environment to Viewpoint on the 6085, if I ever got hold of a distribution... I'm also struggling with GVX at present (Viewpoint on a Sun) and looking for a copy of GVXWin (Viewpoint under Windoze).
Cheers
Mike
