I was recently given an 255 Alphastation. I know it boots up into firmware at least!. I might be able to salvage an old mac scsi disk and I have an old Windows NT 4 CD I might be ablt to install.
I'm a bit of a hardware hacker and would like to trick it out!

I also have a shrink-wrapped copy of Symbolics Genera OS. It is a Lisp machine emulator+lisp Operating system.

Unfortunately it needs Digital Unix (Tru64?) to boot up, and also, I have no idea how to use LISP! I was told that the emulator uses DEC Alpha microcode, and cannot be ported. But it might be fun to try out. In fact I'd be interested in any hardware that could run Genera- on an extremely tight budget.

I believe the remnants of Symbolics still exist and still distribute their software. I'm not sure what selling the CD (or its contents) would entail, but I'm not offering them for sale (yet)

I dunno, I can't help much (with Lisp (but I hear it's pretty kewl (for AI apps (if that's what you're into)), but it can be pretty bothersome (to some of us), just keeping track of all the parentheses))...

Hm. In a LISP operating system, do you really write commands like this?

(print (filter "*.txt" (directory (current-directory))))

That's just brain-twisting...
'puters p|ss me off enough as it is, and they go and make some cryptic thing like that?

PUH-leaaaase! at LEAST now I know what to avoid.
And I thought VMS was a mess to deal with....

Oh, if you do install NT on that thing, make sure to track down a copy of FX!64. That allows Intel IA32 binaries to
run under NT on Alpha. It actually works pretty well, too, from what I remember of my AlphaServer 1000A
I only have one alpha left in my stable - an old 200MHz, overclocked to 233 AXPpci motherboard, with OpenVMS 7.0
on it. 128MB RAM, 4.3GB SCSI, in a PC-AT mini-tower style case. I'll probably keep it forever. Had it at LEAST 10 years
or so!
