So it seems like I won a VS3100 (not sure what flavor) off e-bay. It's running some version of VMS. But the seller said he doesn't know what the SYSTEM password is. He's probably a liquidator or something.

It's been quite some time since I needed to do anything like this, so I'm hoping someone can refresh my memory. I think I either need to boot standalone (hoping that there is a standalone kit built on one of the volumes), or boot conversationally. Once booted, I think it's just 'mcr authorize'.

In any event, I forget how to do either. For some reason, 'boot /r5:0' floats up from the depths, but the picture is fuzzy beyond that.

The Open VMS FAQ has exactly what you need.

Section 5.5 Emergency (Conversational) System Startup- and then specificly- http://h71000.www7.hp.com/wizard/faq/vmsfaq_005.html#mgmt5a

Holler if you have questions
