This is three pages that gives a fairly good introduction to networking in DOS.

http://www.brutman.com/DOS_Networking/

I've been working on this on and off for a while. I'll be filling it in more, including adding a page about my experiences trying to write my own TCP/IP for DOS.

If you have pointers to good DOS TCP/IP applications please send them to me.

Thx,
Mike

Good stuff Mike. My collection is in complete disarray at the moment, but I think I have a copy of IBM Lanmaster, or on one of my boxes. Does that have TTP/IP in it. I also have a bunch of old Network cards, altho I think most of them are token ring. I'm gradually getting stuff back in order after having one of my Hi BP meds cut back and soon discontinued. It was designed I think to slow down compulsive workers which I am definitely not.

Took a quick look and I must have cleared out the network cards except for the PS/2 ones.
I did run across a Davong Systems Network multi function card with a BNC and an external port for an IBM Foppy drive and an internal 60 pin (SCSI ?) and 26 pin floppy. Dated 1983. Main chip is mounted and has COM9026 SMC8406J on it.
Full length card. Another little stubby board has a BNC and the SMC chip labelled COM90C65 SMC C8925.
Both boards have complements of unlabelled jumpers. 8-bit cards.

Just a quick question: Were there ever any 8-bit Ethernet controllers that had the RJ45? Or was it always the DB15/BNC back then?

It depends.

The Intel 8/16 adapters have RJ45 and should work with a modern hub/switch. My Western Digital 8003 cards also have RJ45, but the protocol is slightly non-standard so it does not work with modern equipment - you have to use the AUI port.

Thanks. I've been looking for a way to eliminate all these adapters. Running out of room. heh
